Waste facility tours
1.5-hour tour of the Hanrahan Road Waste Facility, which can be tailored for primary or secondary students. The tour includes a visit to the Materials Recovery Facility and Fossicker’s Tip Shop. 

Waste incursions
Incursions, presentations and activities can be tailored to school requirements.

Waste audits
Assistance is available to schools wishing to conduct a waste audit, including tarps, buckets, tongs and scales.

Interactive waste sorting activity
Schools can request to loan the City’s Waste Sorting Activity, which includes large bin cutouts and icons of a range of items for students to identify which bin they should go in.

City of Armadale

School Battery Program
The City of Armadale offers schools the opportunity to participate in a household battery collection program for the correct disposal and recycling of batteries. 
Your school will receive:
  • Two 4 litre pails that are “dangerous goods” (DG) approved
  • Education posters
  • Collection and storage guidelines
  • An email containing standard wording and images to promote battery recycling.
For your school to participate, please complete the registration form on the website and send to Waste Services.
 
The Recoverables School Program
The City of Armadale partners with Veolia Recycling & Recovery to provide a free waste education program to local schools. The program is designed to help students understand the relationship between waste and the environment.

City of Bunbury

Early Childhood incursions
This incursion teaches early childhood students about waste through a variety of fun and interactive games and stories, plus a visit from our bin mascots, Freddy FOGO or Reggie Recycling Bin.
 
Primary school incursions
This incursion teaches students about waste through a variety of fun and interactive games developed by Recycle Right and WMRC. The games consist of:
  • The GREAT Gifting game
  • The Responsible Recycler game
  • The Excellent Earthcycler puzzle
  • The Awesome Avoiders game
  • The Terrific Taker Relay points
  • Landfill is the Last Resort activity
  • Containers for Change game

The games can be adjusted for age groups to make them more / less challenging. Each session commences and concludes with a summary to consolidate student learning. This program took out the Community Waste Award and Local Government Award at the 2022 WasteSorted Awards.

Secondary school incursions
Incursions investigate the issues of waste and the impacts landfill has on our environment. Students will identify the importance of reducing and correctly sorting waste by recycling and composting and learn how to reduce the amount of waste we produce on a daily basis. Incursions can be tailored to suit the classes requesting the session.  
 
General waste education
Our waste reduction team can help with any waste-related queries and suggest activities and resources for your school.

City of Cockburn

Schools can access free waste education incursions and excursions focusing on waste avoidance, creative reuse of resources and effective recycling. 
 
Resource Recovery tours
The City can provide free bus travel to Henderson Waste Recovery Park. Students will learn about landfill, waste separation and resource recovery. 
  • Tour cost is free. 
  • Minimum age is ten years old. 
  • Tour size is one school class per tour.
  • Adult supervision, one adult per eight students is required.
  • Closed shoes required.
  • Tour duration is 1.5 hours.

Waste Education Trailer 
Schools can borrow the City's mobile waste education trailer, which contains resources on how to reduce, reuse and recycle, as well as fun activities and games. (Recommended for primary school aged children)
 
School recycling hubs 
The waste education team offer recycling hubs to local schools free of charge to encourage recycling of batteries, light globes, small e-waste and printer cartridges as well as separate recycling hubs for aerosols as these items do not belong in either the general waste or recycling bins.

City of Fremantle

School Visit Program
Primary schools in the City of Fremantle can book free, interactive waste education sessions with Cleanaway, designed for students in Years 1–6. These hands-on, curriculum-aligned visits support learning in sustainability, recycling, and resource recovery. Each 1-hour session caters to up to 25 students, with a minimum of two sessions per booking. Spots are limited — contact Cleanaway’s Education and Resource Recovery Specialist on 0498 826 964 to secure your place.

City of Kalamunda

Waste Incursion
We can provide waste and recycling incursions, or we can meet with your Green Team/Waste Warriors and inspire them to take action within their school community. We can tailor a waste incursion to meet your requirements or lesson outcomes. We can also assist with waste and recycling related queries and suggest activities and resources for your school including setting up a recycling hub at your school using upcycled items.

Walliston Transfer Station Tours
Our staff can provide a tour of the Walliston Transfer Station, located at 155 Lawnbrook Road, Walliston. It can be tailored for primary or secondary students. The tour includes a visit to the Second Chance Reuse Shop. Schools need to organise their own transport to the site, but the walking tour of the facility is free.

City of Kwinana

Waste Education Day (Veolia recoverables)
Full day waste incursion for primary schools that covers how kerbside waste is collected in Kwinana and what happens to it once it leaves their house. Each year group has a session with a waste education officer from Veolia, our waste contractor.

School drop-off days
The City will fund and help facilitate a drop-off day for e-waste, pool covers or other items in the community and work with schools as a host.

City of Mandurah

Incursions

The City of Mandurah has partnered with Cleanaway to present their School Education Program. This comprehensive program has been designed to complement national and state curriculum, while providing waste solutions at the local council level. It delivers interactive and engaging sustainability education sessions to students from Year 1 – Year 6 which endeavour to inspire and encourage students to become active, informed and sustainability-minded citizens.

The Cleanaway educators discuss solutions from all levels of the waste hierarchy and promote easy and authentic ways to care and look after our environment. The program encourages children to participate in taking responsibility for household and school waste and recycling efforts. They learn not only how to make the right choices for waste disposal, but more importantly how to prevent waste in the first place.

By equipping enquiring minds with the knowledge and understanding of good waste management practices it helps the next generation help us make a sustainable future possible together.

The City of Swan has waste education games for hire. The games teach kids about bin sorting, recycling and sustainability, in a fun interactive way. Games include:

Waste incursions
The City of Swan is transitioning to a three-bin kerbside collection system, introducing the new FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) bin to the waste services. To help prepare families for the change, the Waste Education team is offering free incursions.  

The incursion cycles students through various stations where they engage in fun, interactive activities related to the City’s three-bin kerbside collection system. These activities have been designed by teachers and include a complementary takeaway item to encourage students to continue their learning and initiate discussions at home.

The program has been designed for primary school students, after-school care and guide groups. Best suited to ages 8+.

These incursions are FREE. Bookings are available for one or multiple sessions to fit in with school schedules and volume of students.

Talking My Language Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) learning resource.
This suite of interactive waste sorting education kits is designed to assist those from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds to better understand how to sort household waste using the three-bin FOGO (food organics, garden organics) system. Kits are available in 12 different languages, including English; each kit consists of double sided, colour coded waste sorting cards, three mini bins, and a ‘Sorting Your Waste’ flyer, and an activity sheet. The kits can be used for small group or whole-class educational activities, and are available for loan from the City of Vincent’s Library of Things.

City of Wanneroo

Talking My Language learning resource
A multilingual interactive self-correcting learning resource. This set of materials is designed to assist those from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds to better understand the three-bin system and how to sort their waste. Included in the kit is a pack of waste sorting cards, three mini bins, a ‘Sorting Your Waste’ flyer, and an activity sheet, which can be used with small groups to help educate and inform. It is available in 11 languages for 3 Bin GO system and 3 Bin FOGO system and can be purchased via online form.

Waste education 'GREAT' games loan for City of Wanneroo schools
The City of Wanneroo Waste Education Team has a set of 'GREAT' games to loan to City of Wanneroo schools. The games focus on the waste sorting behaviours of gifting, recycling, earth-cycling, avoiding and taking, from the WasteSorted 'Be a GREAT Sort' campaign. The games are designed to be played in small groups and can be adjusted for age groups to make them more / less challenging.

Town of Cambridge

Battery collections
Household battery drop-off units are located at several Town of Cambridge primary schools and emptied monthly by our Household Hazardous Waste contractor.

School waste education
School waste education is delivered by our waste contractor Veolia. The Recoverables program is:
  • free and presented by an experienced educator
  • varied in duration depending on the lesson/s selected by the school
  • suitable for groups of up to 33 students
  • adaptable for any age group from Pre-primary to Year 6
    • Rubbish to Resource (45 minutes / all age groups / one class per session, 30 min for K-PP).
    • This workshop is the introductory workshop and must be completed before any others can be chosen.
    • School Waste Audit (2 hours minimum, after lunch / Year 5-6 / Teacher assistance required / one per day).
    • Smart Shopping (45 minutes / Years 3-6).
    • The World Beneath Our Feet (45 minutes / K-6 / K-PP require teacher and EA assistance).
    • Closing the Loop on Organics (45 minutes / K-6 / K-PP require teacher and EA assistance).

Workshops are also offered to day care groups.

Veolia’s Waste Education Officer will visit schools and conduct the lesson/s the school has selected.

Town of Port Hedland

The Town of Port Hedland (TOPH) has a partnership with Care for Hedland (CfH) to assist in the delivery of sustainability, waste, litter and other related initiatives in school settings.

Care for Hedland Waste facility tours

  • School visits to the Containers for Change facility.

Council-run tours of the South Hedland Waste Management Facility

  • Landfill staff can run hands-on tours for students to provide valuable insights into local waste management operations, landfill processes, and the importance of waste reduction and recycling.

Care for Hedland Waste incursions

  • School talks and visits on waste management topics including worm farming and the distribution of worm farms funded by the Town of Hedland for schools.
  • Provide offsite visits to beaches with school groups to share impacts of litter and involvement in the CfH turtle program.
  • Town of Port Hedland staff are happy to engage in youth events around recycling, waste reduction strategies and the broader impact of environmental responsibility.

Waste support/resources

  • Care for Hedland can assist with litter clean-ups and waste audit support to schools, Including the loan of equipment such as bags, gloves, scales, litter pick up sticks.
  • Social media support for waste-related school initiatives.
  • TOPH collaborates with Cleanaway to deliver an engaging educational program focused on recycling contamination.

Veolia WA

Veolia WA ‘Recoverables’ Waste Education councils currently include Armadale, Belmont, Cambridge, Dardanup, Kwinana, and Nedlands. Schools in these councils are able to book the following workshops through their local council waste educator or the contact below.

    This workshop is the introductory workshop and must be completed before any others can be chosen.

Western Metropolitan Regional Council

The Western Metropolitan Regional Council (WMRC) is a local government organisation formed to provide specialist waste management services and education for its five Member Councils of Claremont, Cottesloe, Mosman Park, Peppermint Grove and Subiaco.

School Waste Education Day
The WMRC runs its award-winning School Waste Education Day which aims to teach the top five G.R.E.A.T. behaviours of: gifting, recycling, earth-cycling, avoiding, and taking, encouraging students to do better than landfill and get waste in the right place.

This is a high energy, interactive waste education day filled with age-appropriate activities for kids in Kindy, PP and 1-6. Complete the School Waste Education Day form on the website.

Textile Waste Education Day
This incursion educates secondary students about circularity in the textile industry, emphasising the value of adopting sustainable practices such as thrifting, swapping and repairing to prolong the lifespan of our clothes. It empowers students to think critically about their clothing and provides them with simple, accessible ways they can contribute to a more sustainable future.
