Learning objective
Activities in this resource introduce the container deposit scheme and how to investigate and apply it in Kimberley schools.
Single-use plastic, litter, recycling and 10c container collection.
Every year, Western Australians buy and use billions of disposable drink containers such as soft drinks in cans, fruit boxes, bottled water and flavoured milk.
Many of these containers are made from finite or non-renewable resources such as plastics and aluminium and all are 100 per cent recyclable. However, until recently, most of those 4 billion containers were not being recycled – they were thrown into landfill or discarded as litter.
In 2020, Western Australia’s container deposit scheme, Containers for Change, was launched. WA is the fifth state or territory to implement a container deposit scheme, offering a 10c refund for each drink container returned to a Containers for Change refund point. Since launch Western Australians have saved billions of 10c containers from general waste, that is billions of dollars back into the hands of individuals and communities.
This resource explores how to participate in the container deposit scheme in the Kimberley region of WA, including where to take containers for recycling. The activities engage students in hands-on learning about Containers for Change, why it is so important, and how to encourage others to collect and return 10c containers.
You will need the following resources to complete the activities:
