FOGO Forum 2020 sessions

A series of online sessions covering various FOGO topics were conducted in 2020. You can find further information about these sessions below, including the recordings and presentations.

 

Session 1: Setting the scene – Friday 17 April 2020

Josh Byrne from the Waste Authority provided an overview on FOGO commitments and personal insights into key issues and challenges.

Scott McKenzie from the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation provided an update on FOGO actions in the Waste avoidance and resource recovery action plan 2030.

Gayle Seddon from the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group in Victoria shared insights into the FOGO rollout in Victoria.

 

Session 2: Processing and markets – Friday 1 May 2020

Ruth Dowd from the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation provided an overview of the support and guidance available for organics processors.

Dave Cullen from the Australian Organics Recycling Association spoke about key issues in the organics processing sector.

Craig Barker and Daniel van Veen from SUEZ Recycling & Recovery Australia spoke about key issues from a waste industry perspective.

Tony Battersby from Bunbury-Harvey Regional Council shared insights into compost processing and markets. 

 

Session 3: Local government services – Friday 15 May 2020

Cr Renée McLennan Mayor, Town of Bassendean, provided an elected member’s perspective and insights into managing the transition to FOGO services.

Marcus Geisler from the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) spoke about the EMRC’s FOGO Strategy and Cost Benefit Analysis (Consolidated Cost Model).  

Paul Molony from the City of Melville and Brendan Doherty from the South Metropolitan Regional Council presented detailed information on the FOGO trial and subsequent rollout of FOGO services across the City of Melville.

 

Session 4: Engagement and education – Friday, 29 May 2020

Cara Williams, Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, summarised research findings on waste attitudes and behaviours in Western Australia and presented an overview of the WasteSorted Toolkit.

Taryn Davis, Bunbury-Harvey Regional Council, shared insights for a successful FOGO rollout.

Gayle Seddon and Josh Rule, Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group (Victoria), shared insights into the FOGO rollout in Victoria, including issues faced by local governments and how the group is assisting and supporting local governments.

 

Session 5: Better Bins Plus: Go FOGO presentation and Q&A – Friday, 5 June 2020

Scott McKenzie and Cara Williams, Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, presented an overview of the Better Bins Plus: Go FOGO funding program. The session included an overview of the WasteSorted toolkit, followed by a question and answer session.

 

Session 6: providing FOGO to MUDs online forum – Tuesday, 15 September 2020

Mike Ritchie from MRA Consulting shared insights into the challenges and successes of implementing FOGO services to multi-unit dwellings (MUDs).

Rebecca Brown from WALGA spoke about WALGA’s better practice guidance for FOGO to MUD services.

Ross Cullen, formerly from the City of Fremantle, shared his experiences in rolling out FOGO to MUDs in the City of Fremantle.

Brendan Doherty from the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council talked about the implementation of FOGO to MUDs from a processor perspective.
